Our Most Asked Questions

Throughout the year, we answer a lot of the same questions in our weekly Q&As over on Instagram. From mixing metals to favorite materials, there are certain questions that come up again and again. So we gathered our most frequently asked questions and answered them all in one place.

If you’re just starting to design on your dream home, this post is meant to be a helpful resource you can come back to.

How To Mix Metals

Short answer: focus on balance, not matching.

We like to limit a space to two metal finishes and repeat each one at least twice so it feels intentional. One metal usually leads (for example, cabinet hardware + lighting), while the second acts as an accent which could show up in your plumbing fixtures. The key is to repeat a finish in two places to make sure it looks intentional.

Favorite Paint Colors

Short answer: timeless neutrals with warmth.

Our go-to paint colors are a mix of soft, warm neutrals as well as some fun moody ones. Picking a favorite paint color is kind of like choosing a favorite song, as it changes all the time. But I am linking a list of my tried and trues.

Favorite White Cabinet Paint Color

Short answer: a warm white.

We almost always recommend a soft, warm white for kitchen cabinets. Stark or cool whites can read harsh once paired with stone, wood, and brass. A warm white keeps the kitchen feeling layered, inviting, and timeless.

Is This Timeless or Trendy?

Short answer: if it’s all over your feed, it’s probably trending.

Trends move fast like specific colors, finishes, or shapes that dominate for a moment and then fade. Timeless design is quieter, built on classic materials and simple forms that last. That being said, just because something is trending…doesn’t mean its trendy (i.e., white kitchens). And if something truly feels like you, it’s always worth considering.

Favorite Hardwood Floor

Short answer: a medium oak engineered hardwood.

We consistently gravitate toward neutral, medium oak hardwoods that let the grain shine. Extremely dark or very light floors tend to feel dated faster, while natural tones age beautifully and work with a wide range of styles. Flooring is something I will always tell my clients is worth the splurge.

Favorite Place to Get Artwork?

Short answer: we use a lot of trade-only vendors but I also love Etsy.

The best spaces rarely rely on one source for art. We love combining original work from artists, vintage finds, and thoughtfully sourced prints. The goal is to choose pieces that feel personal and not just decorative. My favorite “affordable” place to get art is Etsy or Juniper Print Shop.

Where Should I Save vs. Splurge?

Short answer: splurge on what you touch everyday.

We recommend investing in items that get the most use like cabinetry, plumbing fixtures in the kitchen and primary bath, and upholstered furniture. Save on things that are easier to swap out, such as end tables, hardware, and decor. This approach gives you longevity where it matters and flexibility where it doesn’t.
